Video poker is a casino game that has much in common with slot machines, but it is a slot machine game combined with the rules of five card draw in a very specific manner. Depending on the payout schedule for the different poker hands on a certain machine, the payback percentage on a video poker can be very good indeed. Jacks or better with a "full pay", or the highest standard payback schedule, pays back at 99.5% with perfect play. A full pay deuces wild machine pays back at 100.7% with perfect play. In actual practice, players who don't play perfectly and make mistakes reduce the practical payback percentage on those machines by 6% or more, making video poker one of the most profitable games in the casino, especially since many video poker players play upwards of 500 hands per hour.
The video poker machine is based on the Five Card Draw game. The object of the game is to get a hand that offers the highest payout possible. Different hand types offer different payouts. Most video poker machines offer returns of over 95% and some even offer returns over 100%.
To begin each round of play the player must make a bet. This bet is taken from the number of credits allocated to the player. After the bet is made, five cards are dealt to the player and are shown on the screen. The player then has the option of holding or discarding as many of these cards as he wants. The cards that he discards are then replaced with new cards from the deck. This new hand represents the player`s final hand. If the hand is good enough to be one of the payout hands, the number of credits allocated to the player will immediately be incremented by the amount specified in the payout table. At this time the machine is waiting for the player to place his next bet to start the process over.
Jacks or better is the most popular form of video poker machine available. When playing this type of machine, the player wins if their final five card hand contains at least a pair of jacks or better. Jacks or better was the original form of video poker, but newer versions include Deuces Wild, Bonus Poker, Double Bonus Poker, Joker's Wild and others.
